Abergavenny Hockey Club

Abergavenny Hockey Club

Old Hereford Road, Abergavenny ,
Abergavenny Hockey Club is one of the oldest in Wales. It has a strong and proud history going back to its inception in 1897. Currently running 1 men's team and 1 ladies team, the club benefits from a friendly relaxed atmosphere with both sections of the club sharing resources and getting together regularly both socially and as committee members. The season 2012-13 sees us enter a new ladies team into the Development Division. This allows our older junior players to combine with some "old heads" and enjoy competitive hockey. The junior section of the club is also thriving. Running sections from Under 9 up to Under 15, we are seeing increasing poularity in the sport from children. The 2012-13 season sees us having junior training from 6:30pm until 8:30pm on Tuesdays. Ladies training is on Thursdays, with the U15 girls being 7pm - 8pm and the senior ladies 8:00pm - 9:30pm Senior matches take place on Saturday afternoons whilst the junior matches take place on Sunday mornings. See exact training schedules and times on the club website www.abergavennyhockey.co.uk

Abergavenny Waffle Co.

Abergavenny Waffle Co.

The Market, Abergavenny ,
Our waffles are Liège waffles, they originate from the Belgian city of Liège. These are not the waffles you sit down to at breakfast - the ones you cover in blueberries and maple syrup or whipped cream. Those are Brussels waffles. A Brussels waffle is made from a light batter and needs toppings because it's much fluffier and lighter. A Liège waffle has more substance. No knife and fork required - you eat them on the go. In Belgium a Liège waffle is considered to be street food. Made from an enriched yeasted dough with pieces of pearl sugar added to the mix, the sugar pieces caramelise in the waffle-iron giving Liège waffles their unique and distinctive flavour. Find us at Abergavenny Market and sample a delicious European street food.

King Henry VIII Grammar School

King Henry VIII Grammar School

King Henry VIII Grammar School, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire was one of a series of schools founded during the Reformation in England and Wales in 1542 from property seized from monasteries and religious congregations. In this case, a school which had been associated with the local Priory Church was administered by the (now Protestant) state instead. The school provided free education to boys in the local area who passed an entrance examination. The school motto was "Ut Prosim" ("That I may be of service") and school colours were red and blue. The school was divided into two houses, Oppidan and Rustican, from the Latin for Town and Country. The school was merged with the local Girls' High School in 1963 and later became a comprehensive school when selection at 11 was abolished. The school is now operating as King Henry VIII School Abergavenny.A former pupil of the school, David Lewis, was the first Principal of Jesus College, Oxford. Amongst other distinguished pupils, well-known writer and critic Raymond Williams gave a fictionalised account of his time there in the novel "Border Country"
