Insole Court

Insole Court

Fairwater Road, Llandaff, Cardiff ,
Insole Court was built in 1856 by James Harvey Insole for his young family. He was the owner of Cymmer colliery and supplier of the famous Rhondda Steam Coal. The three-storey mansion boasts fine gothic masonry; a frieze by William Burges’s assistant, Fred Weekes (as fine as any at Cardiff Castle); a Butler’s Pantry; and a tower with views across the River Severn. A large Edwardian wing boasted the family’s prosperity and place in society, before the house was subject to a compulsory purchase order in 1939. Western Avenue was then constructed through much of the Insole land.

Llandeilo Provisions Market

Llandeilo Provisions Market

Carmarthen Road, Llandeilo ,
The Llandeilo Provisions Market in Carmarthen Street was built in the 1860s by the Stepney Gulston family. Structural improvements were made by the Llandeilo Urban Council in 1923 and it flourished during the early part of the 20th century with stallholders selling market garden produce as well as woollen and household goods. In its ‘heyday’ concerts, including Gilbert and Sullivan operas, were frequently held in the market. However, it declined during the late 1960s and in the 1980s it was taken over by the Brockington Scott engineering firm. It has been empty since Brockington Scott moved their operations to Pontardulais. The building is now owned by Carmarthenshire County Council. In 2004, their preference is for the building to be converted to multifunctional business/office use. The Council are currently seeking funds to create several self-contained ’business units’ that will be arranged around a central ’atrium’. Ashfield Community Enterprise Ltd (ACE)

Ashfield, Howey, Llandrindod Wells ,
We are Ashfeild Community Enterprise (ACE); a socially inclusive community enterprise growing food for local consumption, providing space and workshops for new businesses and promoting healthy living. We grow and sell fruit, vegetables, plants and herbs. Ashfield was originally a tranquil and productive nursery site and house. It had been a hub of activity over the years, but eventually fell into a state of disrepair. ACE, a group of local people who reclaimed the land and facilities on behalf of the community, was founded and successfully secured a BIG Lottery Fund totaling over £400,000 enabling the purchase site and its redevelopment it into a now thriving and continually evolving environment for the community.
