Hope for Belper

Hope for Belper

Hope for Belper grew out of the nationwide Hope 08 initiative launched in 2008. Its initial aim was to see “a million acts of kindness” taking place across the UK in that year. Hope for Belper aims to build on that work by organising projects that continue to demonstrate the love of God to our town. Built on prayer, it has seen Christians and their neighbours from across the town come together to bring the Christian message of hope to our community by practical acts of service.
Belper Meadows Tennis Club

Belper Meadows Tennis Club

Christ Church Meadows, Belper ,
Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racquet that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to play the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a good return. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racquet, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis".

Belper North Mill

Belper North Mill

1A North Mill, Bridge Foot, Belper ,
Jedediah Strutt began building mills here from 1776. The original North Mill was completed in 1786 but was destroyed by fire in 1803. Its replacement, the present mill, was built in 1804 on the earlier mill's foundations by Jedediah's eldest son William Strutt and is one of the oldest surviving examples of an industrialised iron framed, 'fire-proof' building and is now recognised as one of the most important industrial buildings in the world, and as such, is a central attraction in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Construction The mill was one of the most technically advanced building of its time, incorporating an iron frame and brick arches, to make the building "Fireproof". Considerable thought was given to the individual building components. For instance, iron beams were 'turtle-backed' that is, deeper in the middle where they were under the greatest stress. It is a grade I listed building. The Mill houses a museum which shows the story of cotton and the growth of the industrial revolution. There are events organised at the Mill throughout the year.
Belper Bicycle Club

Belper Bicycle Club

The club started out life in the 1940s as Belperion Road Club, before re-emerging in the mid 1970s as Belper BC, with sponsorship from Thorntons Toffee (who had a factory in the town). The club were known as Belper BC Thorntons Toffee during this period. This continued up until 1988 when Thorntons became a PLC and sponsorship ceased. The club was established primarily to cater for the needs of local riders interested in competing in Time Trials and Road Racing. Over the years Belper BC has produced many riders who have competed successfully at regional, national and international level and the club continues to do so today. The red and white jersey comes from when Thorntons sponsored the club. The late Ian Ringrose redesigned the kit with idea of the stars and stripes from the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, USA. The kit has since had a couple of updates since but still retains the stars and stripes theme. Famous riders for the club through the years have included (amongst others) Derrick Woodings, Mike Allen, Dave Orford, Rex Butler, Mick Potts, Mark Storer and Carl Owen. The club supports both competitive and non-competitive cyclists. Members currently compete in Road Racing, Time Trialling, Cyclocross and Mountain Bike cross country events. Non-competitive participation includes touring, cyclo sportifs, club road rides and club MTB rides. Riders meet every Sunday morning for the club run, either at Belper Triangle at 9am or outside the Hurt Arms, at the junction of the A6 and A610 in Ambergate at 9:15am, to normally return around mid-day. The club night is the first Monday every month (except Bank Holidays - then it's a week later) at the Strutt Club, Campbell Street in Belper between 7pm – 9pm.
