Portishead Show and Country Fair

Portishead Show and Country Fair

The Portishead Horticultural Society (PHS) was founded in 1863 and held its’ first Flower Show in that year. Shows have been held every year since then, with the exception of the war years, at a variety of venues. In 1951 the PHS acquired the present Show Field and had the level raised to overcome its’ marshy ground and make it more suitable. The Shows are major events in Portishead’s calendar and have continued to adapt to reflect changing times. The show title has varied to include Fete and Country Fair. Apart from flowers, vegetables and fruit the show has included handicrafts, country crafts, horses, dogs, funfair and even dare-devil motor displays amongst others. The accent today is very much on activities for our children and young people and for promoting local country life, nature and environment as well as being an outlet for our local talent. We seek to continue with the good traditions from our past, whilst introducing new things that we hope will come to be regarded as traditions in the future. The summer flower show is self-financing and costs over £20,000 to stage. Not only is it expensive, but it is entirely dependent upon volunteers doing all of the organisation and manual work. The marquees cover an area as big as a supermarket, which has to be set up, run and dissembled all within one week. For decades the show field was made available for community use through the local council, however they decided not to continue with it, but the show field is still available on request to the Lettings Secretary. The most notable let is to the Carnival. We are indebted to everyone who contributes to the show’s success be they members, patrons, sponsors, local businesses and organisations, TV and radio etc. The Society has close links with the Portishead Floral Art, In Bloom and Allotments as well as various youth organisations. There are over 300 members but we always need new blood to carry the show forward. Membership of the PHS brings with it free show entrance, monthly topical meetings, summer outings and shows etc. The future of our local Show is in your hands - the local people of Portishead.

Portishead Railway Group

Portishead Railway Group

Folk Hall, High Street, Portishead ,
The Portishead Railway Group is a community organisation campaigning for the Portishead to Bristol railway line to be re-opened. Portishead has undergone vast housing development over the past few years with its population almost doubling by 2010. It will soon become the largest town in the country without a rail link when the current housing development programme is complete. There is a strong case for the re-opening of the line to Bristol for the whole community and surrounding area. It will provide quantative easing of congestion for those trying to commute to and from Bristol for work in the mornings and evenings, not to mention reducing Portishead's carbon footprint. It will also provide youth with an alternative, cheaper and faster route into Bristol to see friends and have a car free, safer night out in town! We have a growing membership but need your help to make the difference and bring the railway back to Portishead! please join us on Facebook or visit our website at: http://www.portisheadrailwaygroup.org/ Thank you for your time and support!

Portobello Pop Up Cinema

Portobello Pop Up Cinema

3 Acklam Road, London ,
Portobello ‘Pop Up’ is a 30ft screen, nestled under the Westway. You will find us under the flyover, by 274 Portobello Road/Acklam Road junction, W10 5TY. Ladbroke Grove tube.. Considered by some to be the spiritual home of The Clash, it is within spitting distance of Brett Anderson’s gaff and Jarvis Cocker has been spotted walking his dog just up the road. Blur have affectionately referred to the Ballardian site of our hand-built cinema space in their lyrics. In fact, it is popularly believed that the cinema site is built on sacred ground and radiates a powerful vortex of creative energy. Constructed using recycled and reclaimed materials in the heart of Ladbroke Grove/Notting Hill, it is above all the colourful setting and local community that make our cinema such a unique and special place to experience film. A community Arts venture, we aim to offer a diverse and inspiring programme of films and events open to all, as well as providing an accessible platform for film-makers to screen their work. We hope that the cinema will act as a blueprint for other low cost digital projects. We welcome ideas for screenings and out of hours use of the cinema from all comers, from schools, from artists, filmmakers, NGO’s, voluntary groups etc.
Portobello Open Door

Portobello, Edinburgh ,
POD is a community partnership working towards the promotion and development of culture and the arts in Portobello. The partnership aims to involve the talents and interests of local people. We would like to produce events, classes and social opportunities; drawing from aspects of culture – all cultures – using such forms as art, theatre, music, writing, dance; to name a few. POD was formed in May 2003 after like-minded people got together to explore bringing the acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe to the local area. We want to give a platform and profile to the many creative and talented people who stay in the area and to work towards exploring the possibilities for action – environmental, cultural, campaigning and social - that will lead to the development of our local community. We want to explore the ways in which we can all work together – using our creative skills and stimulated by creativity. Portobello has a true feeling of community – we feel it should be cherished and developed and that the area needs to be improved and given a higher profile. POD will aim, in the future, to develop local programmes that are relevant, creative and transformative. POD aims to be complementary to current activities in the area and aims to appeal to all sections of the community. All our activities will be dependent on the success we have in obtaining funding and resources via grant applications, sponsorship, donations and support in kind.
