Skipton Girls' High School, founded in 1886 by the Petyt Trust, is an all-girls selective grammar school situated in Skipton, North Yorkshire, England. The school has academy status. Around 800 girls aged 11 to 18 are educated at the school, of which 190 are in the sixth form. The current Executive Headteacher is Mrs Renou, with Miss Costello taking up the new role of Head of School in September 2012.StatusThe school was awarded specialist status as an Engineering College in September 2003, becoming the first all-girls school to achieve this status. It also has Investors in People accreditation.On 1 April 2011, the school became an academy.AdmissionAs an academy the Governors are responsible for the admissions. Girls who wish to join the school sit a selection test. There is no selection test for entrance into sixth form as students are admitted on the basis of their GCSE grades.Academic standardsFollowing the inspection on 5 March 2008 the school was rated Outstanding, Grade 1 on a five point scale. The report said "This is an outstanding school. Standards are high and students achieve very well.... The headteacher’s vision and drive are widely recognised within the school and the staff show high levels of unity and shared purpose. Students enter with standards of attainment that are well above average and these are built on very effectively throughout the school..... The school has established suitable channels of communication with parents but could do more to actively involve parents in school life."

A visit to the Russian Tea Room is a must for all residents and visitors of Skipton. Even just for a cup of tea (158 variations to choose from) and a slice of their home made treacle tart makes you think that you are sitting adjacent the Kremlin, and not just Skipton Castle! However, there is far more to the Russian Tea Room than just a cup of tea. The Russian Tea Room has a superb new menu, serving traditional Russian dishes presented very elegantly, amicably priced to suit both the connoisseur, and the casual eater. The range of Vodka's, challenge even the meagre to sample the flavours. From 'Chocolate and Raspberry' to "Hot Jalapeño" all served directly from the freezer , but the 'Sticki Honey' one gives you the warming and soothing effect that honey appears to offer whilst you are sipping a drop of the "Russian Water"! Not to forget to mention the Culture Room, with the Patisserie at the back of the ground floor shop, that offers a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere serving teas and coffees along with freshly made snacks and pastries prepared in the premises. The Culture Room is fast becoming the hub for all things Russian, with a new Language service offering Russian Speaking courses, art and photographic displays and an extensive range of Russian Culture books to read at your leisure. A visit to the Russian Tea Room is a must, as well as to the adjoining Russian Shop, filled with everything Russian you could ever dream of....the ambience, character, and friendliness of the staff...will ensure that you will leave this little part of Russia, well fed, well watered, and well...wondering when you are going to return and sample their hospitality again!

Ermysted's Grammar School

Ermysteds Grammar School is a LEA-funded selective boys' Grammar School in Skipton, North Yorkshire, England, teaching over 800 pupils. It is the seventh oldest state school in Britain and was founded by Peter Toller in the 15th century. The first official record of the school was seen in Peter Toller's will in 1492; the school records its establishment as the same year.The motto of the school is 'Suivez La Raison'. Translation from the French is roughly 'follow the truth'. The school's hymn is Jerusalem by William Blake. The school operates a house system with inter-house competition in sports, and an annual house quiz held around Christmas. The four houses, Toller, Ermysted, Petyt and Hartley, are named after key figures in the school's history. Whilst it operated a boarding house Ermysted's boarders were members of School House which was affiliated with Ermysted House for the purposes of inter-house competition.The current headmaster is Graham Hamilton; his predecessor, Thomas Ashworth, retired at the end of the 2007-08 school year.The A-level results of 2006 officially placed it as the best school in Yorkshire, ranking higher than fee paying schools, and amongst the top 25 nationally. In 2008 it was reported that the school achieved the best Yorkshire state school A-level exam results.In 2007 the school came 76th in the top 100 UK schools in terms of Oxbridge admissions.Brief history1492 – Peter Toller's will confirmed that he had already founded a school in his chantry of St Nicholas in the parish church, the school takes this as its founding date.
