RAF Fairford

RAF Fairford

Royal Air Force Station Fairford or more simply RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force (RAF) station in Gloucestershire, England which is currently a standby airfield and therefore not in everyday use. Its most prominent use in recent years has been as an airfield for United States Air Force B-52s during the 2003 Iraq War, Operation Allied Force in 1999, and the first Gulf War in 1991. It is "the USAF's only heavy bomber airfield in the European theatre".RAF Fairford was the only TransOceanic Abort Landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle in the UK. As well as having a sufficiently long runway for a shuttle landing (the runway is 3,046 m (9,993 ft) long), it also had NASA-trained fire and medical crews stationed on the airfield. The runway is rated with an unrestricted load-bearing capacity, meaning that it can support any aircraft with any type of load.RAF Fairford is also the home of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), an annual air display. RIAT is one of the largest airshows in the world, with the 2003 show recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest military airshow ever, with an attendance of 535 aircraft.USAF unitsOn 14 January 2004, the 420th Air Base Group was established at RAF Fairford to improve the control of its geographically separated units, , that had been aligned beneath the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall. These units are assigned to airfields at RAF Fairford, RAF Croughton, RAF Alconbury, RAF Molesworth and RAF Menwith Hill. The 420 ABG reported directly to 3rd Air Force until 26 May 2004, when the 38th Combat Support Wing was established at Sembach Annex, Germany to provide oversight on its behalf.

Fairford & District Choral Society

Fairford & District Choral Society

In 2006 it was decided to formalise this choir into the Fairford and District Choral Society to perform several concerts a year of both a sacred and secular nature. The conductor is John Read who is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors. How to join: We welcome people of age 16 and above. If you have some knowledge of music and are able to sing at sight this will help you with some of the more demanding music but if you have a tuneful voice and a good musical memory you should not have any great difficulty in performing the music we sing. From time to time we arrange Singing Training Days to help with voice production. Our 2011 fees are currently £45 per annum or £22.50 per term. These monies are used to defray the expenses of hiring soloists and copies and compare very favourably with other local choirs. Fees are waived for people under the age of 21. If you would like to join please contact the Membership Secretary on 01285 713681, by email (choralsociety@fairford.org) or fill in and post the application form on our website. Where we meet: Concerts normally take place in the beautiful and historic setting of St Mary’s Church in Fairford. St Mary’s is famous for its complete set of stained glass from the 15th century, which is unique in a parish church. Rehearsals are held in the Fairford United Church, Milton Street, Fairford GL7 4BW, where the facilities are excellent. Our logo was kindly designed by Jake Sutton.
