South West College Performing Arts
There are many varied roles for individuals within the performing arts, including singing, acting and dancing. Rewards for those who reach the top of their profession can be great, but this is an enormously competitive environment. BTEC Level National Diplomas in Performing Arts and our Foundation Degree acredited by the University of Ulster both offer a range of specialisms, including dance and musical theatre.
The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting)
The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) is a seven unit qualification, studied over 1 year. It is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills required by the Performing Arts industry. There is an emphasis on practical work with students performing throughout the year.
Course Content
Students must complete 4 core units plus 2 specialist optional units plus 1 further optional unit. Core Units Working in the Performing Arts Industry Professional Development in the Performing Arts Industry Performing Arts Production Process Acting Skills and Techniques Optional Units Includes both drama and dance modules.
Progression
Successful students have the opportunity to progress onto National Diploma courses. Career pathways include Theatre, TV, Radio, Film, PR, Marketing and Human Resources.
Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting)
All applicants must attend an interview and audition prior to acceptance on the course.
Background
This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of performance and production. This is a practical course in which students devise and perform pieces for different types of theatre. The course also provides learners with the opportunity to organise and run their own Theatre Company. This will develop not only their artistic talent and flair, but also their communication, managerial and business skills.

Progression
Students may progress onto relevant Higher Education courses in Performing Arts and related fields. Career pathways include TV, Theatre and Radio, Community Education, Drama Therapy and PR.

Entry Requirements
The overriding consideration in admitting students to the course, is evidence that the student is likely to be able to complete the course satisfactorily • 80 UCAS tariff points (10 points pre 2002) • 4 GCSE passes including English or equivalent • One A Level or A BTEC National Diploma or AVCE Award, with distinctions and merits in most units or another qualification deemed to be appropriate by the admissions tutor including an approved Access course OR • Provide evidence of their ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning. All applicants will be interviewed and auditioned before admission
Background
This course has been designed in conjunction with the University of Ulster, a number of other Colleges and with employers in the Performing industry. It is in response to the recognition that, in spite of the current economic climate, this dynamic industry, with its diverse career opportunities, will show rapid growth as an employer in the future.
Course Content
This course is a two year programme consisting of two semesters per year. Modules include: Year 1: • Community Theatre • Performing Arts Business • Acting/Dance • Irish Theatre • Technical theatre Year 2 • Work Based Learning • Establishing your own Theatre Company
Progression
Successful completion of the Foundation Degree provides students with the opportunity to progress to the final year of the BA Honours Degree in Drama or Dance at the University of Ulster, Magee Campus.
