Luke Hitchins Landscape Designer
Background -
Luke's inherent childhood passions of nature and the outdoors, sport and art informed his choices of A-level subjects; Geography (A), Art (B), Sports Studies (C) and Biology (D). During the time spent completing his A-levels, Luke looked into careers in the world of art and with the help from his art teacher came across a certain building called 'Falling Water' by Frank Lloyd Wright. An essay on 'Organic Architecture' later and he signed up to study Architecture at Nottingham Trent University. His final year project was to design 'a nature interpretation centre' which used architecture to encourage and inspire engagement with natural elements through multi sensual experience; achieving a 2:1.
After gaining the BA(Hons) degree in Architecture and spending a third period of work experience getting his hands dirty with Kevin McCabe's cob building company; 'Build Something Beautiful' down in Devon, Luke made the decision to align his career further to his key passions and so delved into the world of gardening and landscape. Luke spent a year with a landscape design and maintenance company and consequently signed up for the Masters conversion course in Landscape Architecture at Writtle College in Essex; achieving a 2:1 in the first year.
In 2012 Luke wrote his MA thesis on the engagement of urban dweller minds to the natural world in a time of technological immersion and since continues to develop relevant concepts and possibilities. Luke's key skills lie in his ability to purposefully take the initiative and evolve. He understands and revels in both team work and independently making things happen. During his masters studies and since then Luke has worked as a self-employed gardener and also undertook his own design work which has lead him to become involved in a variety of projects from pruning rose gardens in English country estates to the design of infinity edge swimming pools in Menorca.
Personal enterprise - To always continue to evolve; explore, enjoy, become fascinated and share in the knowledge and experience of what's real in this world and it's benefits to us as humans. To one day design and build my own organic house with connected land in order to provide a hub for myself and those closest to create and share happy memories of a life evolved amongst what's real to us.
