The Hackney Foodbank

The Hackney Foodbank

St Peter's Hall Office, 56 Warner Place, London ,
How a foodbank works Food is donated: Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Hackney foodbank. All food given out by the Hackney foodbank is donated. ‘Supermarket Collections’ are one of the main ways that food is donated. These are held at supermarkets where volunteers give shoppers a ‘foodbank shopping list’ and ask them to buy an extra item or two for local people in crisis. Food is sorted and stored: Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date, ready to be given to people in need. Frontline care professionals identify people in need: Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Clients receive food: Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
Hackney Secrets

Hackney Secrets

Hackney, particularly the landscape, has long been unfairly stereotyped with negativity, as confirmed by our Market Research whereby one local resident called it “mucky and unappealing.” Despite this bias long existing, not many people have done much to amend it or try to rebrand Hackney’s name – we are. Living and growing up in Hackney, this bias has prompted us to start up a project called Hackney Secrets; comprising of 8 Sixth form students from Clapton Girls’ Academy. Our primary aim is to eradicate the negative stereotypes often associated with the landscape of our borough by framing beautiful and natural photographs of various Hackney areas in local hotspots. By doing so, commuters and residents of the borough will be able to appreciate the beauty of Hackney, which they would otherwise not see in their daily lives or even know exist! Ultimately, this project will allow us to showcase the true beauty of Hackney that was ever-present yet concealed. *Update* We have recently been awarded a £300 grant from the O2 THINK BIG scheme, bringing us one step closer to making our project a 3D reality! :D Watch this space!
