Bonny Downs Community Association (BDCA) is a dynamic charitable organisation rooted in the vibrant but deprived area of East Ham, London. BDCA was founded by local residents in 1998 in response to the unmet needs of the community. During the past twelve years we have extended our remit to become a multi-purpose organisation delivering a range of specialist projects which support vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged local residents. Our motto is ‘changing lives, transforming our community’ and our mission is to work for a WHOLE community by providing exceptional activities, services and facilities that promote Wellbeing, Hope, Opportunity, Love and Encouragement. Bonny Downs Community Association’s Grow Together, Be Together project will be a community food growing and healthy eating promotion scheme striving to improve the quality of life of residents in our a deprived area (Newham). The overarching vision of this project is: The project aims are to: Provide a community disconnected to food growing with opportunities to grow their own produce. Improve the quality of life of residents living in the deprived location of East Ham and surrounding areas. Re-connect and educate people about the value of food growing and local food. Encourage local people to adopt healthier lifestyles through educating about the benefits of balanced diets. Promote social cohesion through bringing together local people from any gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or cultural background. Reduce isolation among local residents, particularly older people and disadvantaged children and families, through creating opportunities for excluded residents to build supportive friendship networks. Provide local residents with opportunities for skills development, training, confidence building and the chance to actively effect change in their community by helping to drive forward a local initiative. Lessen the environmental impact of a local community cafe and catering training project by reducing the number of food miles. Establish a sustainable enterprise project through the scheme.
