Burnley Sports Awards

Burnley Mechanics, Manchester Road, Burnley ,
Burnley Community Sports Awards has been established to recognise and celebrate the contributions and achievements of local people and communities to sport, physical activity, and community development. Following an amazing year for sport in the UK with the success of London 2012 we are pleased to have secured former Olympian Derek Redmond as this year’s host. Derek Redmond specialised in the 400ms and also competed in relay events, his achievements include breaking Roger Black's world record, and becoming world champion in 1991 for the relay. His most memorable moment of his career came the following year, when he hobbled the last 250 metres of a race after being struck by injury midway. He is known for his pride, passion and determination.

Building Bridges in Burnley

Building Bridges in Burnley

2 Clegg St, Burnley ,
BBB is an interfaith organisation created after 2001 'serious disturbances' in Burnley to enchance awareness and understanding between different Faith Groups. The organisation advocates diversity and aims to promote social cohesion through interfaith activities. It was initiated through discussions between the Bishop of Burnley and other clergy and Muslim community representatives in the locality of the disturbances, specifically to assess the situation and explore ways in which to mitigate the existing, and prevent future, inter-community problems. Initial informal meetings eventually culminated in the formation of BBB as a registered charity in 2002. Since then it has become a Company Limited by Guarantee, incoportating the Bridge Project for young people, which was established at approximately the same time as BBB in a local parish church.

Say No To Calico

Say No To Calico

Granville street, Burnley ,
Proposals have been tabled by Calico to build 60 new homes on the existing un-developed, former Primrose Mill site, behind Queen St Mill right here in Briercliffe. NONE of the plans show sufficient road links to Burnley/Briercliffe Road, with the existing residents all the area already struggling to park their vehicles outside their homes. They (Calico's plans) all rely on channeling all traffic along Queen Street, Townley Street & Granville Street, which are all narrow residential streets. Which raises the following questions - 1 - With all the construction traffic that maybe coming along Queen Street, Townley Street & Granville Street, where are the residents expected to park their vehicles whilst over sized loads - Bulldozers, Excavators, Heavy-Lifting Machinery & Dump Trucks, on the back of lorries are coming to and from the site on a daily basis? 2 -Has there been effective consultation (Traffic, Access routes etc)? 3 - Why doesn't the new development go to a more suitable area of Burnley - such as Duke Bar, Stoops Estate, Daneshouse, Stoneyholme, which would benefit more with the redevelopment, rather then our tight-knit community? The purpose of this page is to obtain more information for us - the community, and to put pressure on Calico, Burnley Council & Briercliffe Parish Council to look at alternative and more palatable options. Time is desperately short to stop Calico from putting a major housing development right here in our historical village, behind our world famous historical amenities. The only way to insist upon debate on this issue is by force of numbers! We need to individually make representation to Burnley council's planning office and raise awareness to all the residents here in Briercliffe & Harle Syke. It's over to you and this is entirely a numbers game. The only way to stop this is if enough of us register our disagreement to these plans.
