Language to Treasure
The emphasis is on the children discovering the language for themselves. At the start of every session the children open the language treasure chest and find out what’s inside: puppets and props for role-play and drama; percussion instruments for song and dance; art and craft materials for practical hands-on activities.
For language learning to progress a structured grammatical approach is needed and for language learning to be fun the vocabulary needs to be creative and child-centred. Different themes will be explored every session: pirates, outer-space and castles to name but a few, or favourite characters from the best of children’s literature. Whatever the theme, the KS2 Framework for Languages will always be followed to ensure smooth progression, but the children will be having too much fun to notice.
A summary of the grammatical points covered together with worksheets will always be provided for them to take home at the end. By talking about what they did and what they learnt during the session and by sharing a worksheet with you at home, not only will their learning continue but yours will too! It’s amazing what you can learn from a child!
