South Street Chiropractic
Julien Barker B.Sc. (Hons) DC MMCA MCA
Like many graduates of the McTimoney Chiropractic college, my first experience of Chiropractic was as a patient.
Aged 17 I hit a parked car on my push bike and went through the back windscreen. A bit of a stiff neck became a serious problem several years later, severely affecting my shoulder and sleep.
At the age of 19, I was being advised that I would need to take painkillers for the rest of my life. My mum suggested a Chiropractor (Chiro what?). Three sessions later and the problem was resolved. To date, it still hasn't returned. Of course there have been a few injuries since then but Chiropractic is always my first choice for treatment and is the key to a speedy recovery. I'm still a maintenance patient myself every 3 months!
I graduated with B.Sc Hons degree in Applied Biology from Bath University in 1992. After a few years working in a hard science environment as a microbiologist, I trained as a Chiropractor. After 4 years of training I graduated and began my career in May 2000 at the Rose & Crown clinic in South Molton.
After ten good years, I decided it was time to fly solo and set up my own clinic at 11 South Street.
Whilst holding true to the principals of McTimoney Chiropractic, I mostly use Activator Chiropractic methods these days. I am one of only forty Advanced Proficiency rated Activator practitioners in the UK and, to date, the only one in Devon. I also integrate Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) as well as Dry Needling. I am proud to say that the bulk of my referrals come from personal recommendation.
Simply put, once the patient's problem is diagnosed, I use a variety of skills to create a bespoke treatment which will fit their individual healthcare needs.
When I'm not busy doing this, I live on a smallholding with my wife Claire and our two beautiful daughters. I love surfing, mostly on my longboard at Saunton Sands.

Like many Chiropractors, my first experience with the profession was born out of necessity, after an acute hospitalization with a lumbar disc herniation. After all else had failed, I sought treatment from a McTimoney Chiropractor. Within a couple of treatments I was up and about and back at work. After seeing the results for myself I was so impressed I took up the vocation.
Originally I hail from Cornwall, from where I moved onto University in Cheltenham. I graduated with a Chiropractic degree in 2004 and initially held successful clinics in Bristol and Cheltenham.
Working in Bristol I was heavily involved in one of the very first NHS Chiropractic programmes, sitting on the General Chiropractic Council's consultation panel; looking into the working relationship between Chiropractic and the NHS. This programme still runs successfully to the present day.
My main areas of expertise lie in manipulation; realigning the spine and working with the supporting muscle tissue. When both approaches are combined they produce a complete treatment programme.
My family has recently moved to the countryside, living and working on Exmoor. We have purchased a rundown former hotel overlooking the sea and at present are turning it into a family home.
When not treating patients my physical energies go into swimming and cycling. Outside of sports I am involved with community work as a member of the Round Table and play active roles in fundraising within the Birdman and Rescue Day annual events at Ilfracombe.
I'm pleased to have been asked to join South Street Chiropractic - a rapidly growing practice - and welcome new patients.
