Portaferry Presbyterian Church , built in 1841, has been described by the illustrious CEB Brett as being 'one of the most interesting examples of Greek Revival architecture in Ireland... a magnificent Greek temple with a six columned portico at each end... one of the most distinguished neo-classical buildings in Ulster.' FPPC was formed with the intention of reviving this wonderful building and expanding it's use to include much more than the current weekly service. A highly successful series of concerts and other events has created a much greater awareness of the building and its potential. Now the efforts of the fPPC are being directed towards securing Heritage Lottery funding in order to reinvent the building as a heritage centre and a fantastic performance venue, benefiting the local community and visitors alike. QML is located in Portaferry at the entrance of beautiful Strangford Lough, a large enclosed, marine lagoon (150 km2) opening into the Irish Sea. We are approximately one hour drive from the main QUB campus in Belfast. Strangford Lough is a Special Area of Conservation under the European Union Habitats Directive. The marine flora and fauna in the vicinity of Portaferry are among the most diverse in the North Altantic; Portaferry is located in close proximity to an extraordinary diversity of habitats, from tidal mudflats inside Strangford Lough to the exposed coast of the Irish sea outside the Lough. The entrance to Strangford Lough is a narrow channel that experiences high speed tidal fluctuations, the whole volume of the Lough is exchanged every two weeks through a passage less than 1 km wide. The Narrows is the site of an experimental commericial tidal energy generator, SeaGen, operated by Marine Current Turbines. Students and Postgraduate Researchers at QML conduct fieldwork and research on a wide variety of subjects including Marine Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Sustainable Energy Resources and Tidal Engineering.

Barholm & The Ferry Port Cafe is a tastefully restored Victorian house occupying an outstanding location on Portaferry’s shore front. It offers a range of bedrooms including single, double, family and group rooms, most of which have en suite bathrooms. Conference facilities include a large fully equipped conference room and smaller breakout areas. Our Cafe located in conservatory overlooks Strangford Lough providing a superb dining area. Barholm can accommodate up to 45 guests, so is popular with groups as well as families and individuals. All bedding and towels are provided. At Barholm, you can get a double en suite room overlooking Strangford Lough for just £45 per couple or you can choose our latest Dinner Bed Breakfast offer for just £37.50 per person sharing.

Pl@CE2b is a youth club for 14 to 20yo people in and around Portaferry, running by all 4 Churches of the town. Pl@CE2b is every other Friday 8pm -10pm, mostly in the Rooms in Castle Yard, but also sometimes ind St Patricks Community Centre, UPPER ROOM or Cuan Mews.
