The College is the largest centre of further education in Oldham. It is in the top 10% of colleges in the country; rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, and holds LSIS Beacon Status for excellence in its delivery of learning skills. The College offers a range of vocational courses aimed at 16–19 year olds, adults, and businesses. The College also has manages a large Apprenticeships scheme. In addition to the main campus site on Rochdale Road, the College has Alexandria House – where construction crafts are taught, a Green Technology Centre, and Salon 7 - a professional hair and beauty salon.

I drew 2 lines through Oldham Town Centre with St Marys/Retiro Street as the vertical and Middleton Rd/High St/Yorkshire Street as the horizontal - and realized everything in the south west could be in the 'Western Quarter' philosophy - an alternative Oldham night out to Yorkshire Street full of cosmopolitan food, live music venues, real ales, art, culture and ultimately safer. 'South Western Quarter' was a bit of a mouthful though... Stretching from the Sixth Form College on Union Street West through the Bank Top Tavern, The Abbey, Whittles, Shugga Rush, Taj Palace, Mecca Bingo and Jackson's Pit at one end - through The Brewery Tavern, Charcoal Grill, Wino's, Godfathers, Peri Peri Grill, Kansas Fried Chicken, Rainy City Roller Girls, University Campus Oldham, the Ashton Arms, the Lyceum and The Old Bill, and ending at the Art Gallery, Library, Valentinos and Don Pedros on Retiro Street at the other - Oldham has a buzzing alternative scene going on that is safe, friendly and welcoming to everyone!

THREE local businessmen have provided an encore for one of Oldham’s best-loved music venues. Former rock haunt Whittles closed last month - but will reopen its doors tonight with a vow to continue a live music policy. Owners Here For You Hospitality have leased the King Street venue to pals Martin Schofield, from Lees, Neil Haughton, of Royton and John Dodd, from Derker. Martin (51) said: “If we hadn’t taken it on the shutters would have stayed down, leaving Oldham with another lost music venue.” The trio plans to organise concerts from a variety of music styles, not just rock. Whittles has been refurbished in the past few weeks and is to retain its free admission policy. Martin hopes this weekend will be the dawn of a new era. He added: “Me and Neil have known each other since college and were regulars at Whittles. I work with Here For You Hospitality on other projects and was asked if I was interested. Without hesitation we all got on board as we are all passionate about music.”

Oldham Sixth Form College was inspected by Ofsted in April 2008 and we are delighted to report that the Inspectors described us as “an outstanding college”! The fantastic results of our previous Inspection, in March 2004, have seen a further improvement.
