Narberth Allotments
March 2009 exert from Western Telegraph:-
'Narberth's campaign for a community allotments scheme has finally borne fruit.
After a 15-year wait, townspeople keen to tend their own little piece of land are now able to get digging and cultivating. Narberth Allotments had their first handover of plots on Sunday, when a pair of shears was wielded to cut baler twine and declare the site officially open.
"Everybody is so enthusiastic about the project, and delighted we have actually got allotments at last," said Amber Wheeler, who was amongst those leading the drive to secure the land.
Residents in Narberth first asked the county council for land for allotments back in 1994, but despite a 10-year campaign, no suitable land could be found and hope faded.
Then, last September, with recession looming and the need for people to grow their own food becoming ever more important, a small group of people decided to take the initiative and set up an allotment site themselves.
Explained Amber: "We approached a local landowner on the outskirts of Narberth, who agreed to lease us a field, and after a poster campaign, over 20 people requested an allotment. Some of these people had been waiting for 15 years."
The allotments are next to Narberth Compost Corner, on the right before Herons Brook, Narberth. A community garden is being established alongside the site which is open to anybody to go along and enjoy, do some gardening or take a gardening course.
