VE is proposing to build one of the world’s most productive wind farms using tried & tested technology for the benefit of Shetland. Shetland has a unique opportunity to lead the rest of the UK in making a real contribution to tackling climate change using its natural resources. For the first time a local community is involved in the development of a large-scale wind farm, from which it could profit directly. It is hoped the community can benefit from £930 million over the wind farm’s lifetime. When operational the wind farm will produce clean, green energy and help to meet Scotland’s renewable energy targets. By connecting Shetland to the national grid, a new industry would be introduced to the local economy, providing opportunities for generations of Shetlanders. A connection could also unlock the enormous potential of Shetland’s wave & tidal resources.

Shetland Islands Council has identified improving data communication services across the Isles as one of its key targets. To help meet this aspiration the SIC has set up the Shetland Telecom Project. Its remit is to improve data communications by bringing "next generation access" or NGA services to the Islands.
