Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling
The Johnstone Jets is the youth section of the Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club which has been at the heart of the Renfrewshire cycling community since 1926
Having been involved in joint ventures in youth cycling over the years the Johnstone members decided it was time we had our own youth cycling in the heart of Renfrewshire
The Johnstone Jets was formed as a British Cycling Go-Ride Club over the winter months of 2007-08 with a number of members of the parent club becoming Level 2 Coaches. This entails the completion of the British Cycling Level 2 Coaching Course, First Aid Training, Enhanced Disclosure and a course on Safeguarding and Protecting of Children
These coaches have progressed to British Cycling Discipline Specific qualifications in Track Cycling, Road & Time Trial and Mountain Biking
What is Go Ride ?
Go-Ride is British Cycling’s Club Development Programme aimed at improving both young riders and clubs. It focuses on volunteers and young members – improving coaching standards and increasing the number of young riders with access to coaching activities.
The emphasis is on fun, while teaching a variety of cycling skills and which can be done on any bike. All the activities take place on traffic free facilities, such as school playing fields and playgrounds.
Clubs must already meet certain criteria before joining the programme but along the way they continually work towards improving themselves and achieving ‘best-practice’. Once all the pieces are in place, a club can become Go-Ride Clubmark Accredited.
When and Where does the club meet?
Go-Ride sessions are be run on Saturday mornings from April through to October with additional Race Specific coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings through out the year either on Road or Cyclocross disciplines
Registration is 09:15am for a 09:30am start. The session ends at 11:30am when it would be appreciated if parents could collect their children on time
The main venue for the Go-Ride sessions is Linwood Sports Centre.
What do I need to take part?
· A bike. It would be useful if parents could check bikes in advance for roadworthiness, although each session will begin with a bike / helmet / clothing check.
· A helmet. No helmet, no ride.
· Appropriate clothing. Cycling is an outdoor sport, and the sessions will go ahead in (almost!) any weather conditions. Each child should wear warm clothes (a couple of thin layers work better than one thick one) and bring a waterproof.
· Track mitts (Ideal but not a must. Track mitts will protect your hands in the event of a fall.)
· A drink and a snack. Cycling can be hard work.
Who can take part?
· Anyone between the age of 8 and 17
· In the first year the membership will be limited to 25 children. This will allows us to coach with a target ratio of 1 coach to 10 children which will allow us to maximise safety, and to give the maximum amount of coaching to each child.
How much does it cost?
· Annual club membership is £10.00 per child payable on the start of the child’s third session.
· There are no individual session charges
· Occasionally the club may travel away from Linwood for different cycling disciplines. For these type of events, there may be additional costs.
We would ask that if your child is interested in coming along that you contact the Club Secretary in advance to reserve their place.
