There has been a lifeboat station at Ilfracombe for 185 years, with the current building in Broad Street having been opened in 1996. Ilfracombe RNLI operate two lifeboats, the Mersey Class all-weather lifeboat Spirit of Derbyshire, which began service in 1990 and the D-class inshore lifeboat Deborah Brown II, which came to Ilfracombe in 2009. The RNLI is the charity which saves lives at sea, operating over 235 lifeboat stations around the coast of the UK and Ireland, providing a 24 hour lifeboat search and rescue service. The RNLI also provides a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in the UK, including locally to Ilfracombe at Woolacombe and Croyde.
