2006 was the year when the Earth trembled in Scotland. In a spray of ink and glistening of needle tips Rock’n’Roll Tattoo and Piercing was born in Edinburgh. And everyone knew that the tattoo scene would never be the same again! The beginnings, as usual, were not easy – as the new boys on the block, Rock’n’Roll crew had to work hard to put themselves on the tattoo map of the UK. But the artistic excellence, professional attitude, friendly atmosphere, custom designs and the highest possible level of hygiene made us some new friends and a lot of customers. Customers, who couldn’t get enough of R’n’R ink! Through the word of mouth, media advertisements, myspace and facebook profiles people were learning about the Rock’n’Roll Tattoo and Piercing – and the more they learned the more they loved it! Not only could they get tattoos and piercings of the highest quality, but they could also cover their old crappy tattoos with brand new, shiny ones. I am a graduate of the MFA postgraduate art course and the Ba (hons) at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Originally from Cumbria, I am now based in North Fife, Scotland. I have been exhibiting widely throughout the UK since the mid 1990’s and has won a number of awards, including 'The Sir Robin Phillipson Memorial Medal' at the Royal Scottish Academy Students Exhibition, the 'Cuthbert New Young Artist' award and the prestigious 'Armour Award' at the Royal Glasgow Institute and came runner up in the Jolomo landscape painting awards in 2007. My paintings are in essence abstractions of the Scottish landscape in which she finds herself immersed. My painting is in a constant state of flux, a condition perpetuated by my experience of the shifting weather systems that roll inexorably across this landscape, as a counterpoint to the slow creep of geological time. I react freely to the immensity of nature before me, attempting both to capture the spirit of place, and humanity’s transient experience of it. Graphite scratched across a primed ground, loose colour washes, determined single brush strokes, and ghostly scumbled glazes are just some of the techniques used to convey a sense of place at a particular moment in time. The marks are chosen with a considered awareness of what is needed to convey a sense of the shifting, fluid elements of the changing patterns in nature, and although the work is undoubtedly informed by the Scottish landscape in terms of its pallet and surface, it is equally concerned with the paint itself, its application, and its role as a visual language that seeks to convey the artist’s perceptions of living in the landscape.
