The Wig Bank- I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2012. For me the worst part of all the treatments was losing my hair during chemotherapy. To buy a new wig costs a lot of money – even an NHS prescription ones are expensive, so I decided to set up the Wig Bank in Clydebank to help others. I personally found the process of obtaining a wig with my NHS voucher quite a cold experience and as I am a former hairdresser, I was determined that no other woman should be made to feel like that again! My sister contacted the Wig Bank based in Perth that was set up by a lady called Elizabeth who’s own sister had breast cancer and she felt the same. I decided to bring the Wig Bank to the West of Scotland and surrounding areas, so woman, like me, could be made to feel relaxed and comfortable when choosing a wig that suits them. People donate their no longer needed wigs to the Wig Bank, we wash, condition and disinfect them, then sell them for between £20-£40 donating each sale to Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre, who are such a help during treatment. Brand new wigs have recently been sourced direct from the manufacturer and they are sold for £40 compared to at least 3 times that amount in the normal shops.
