S S Motors (Fuels) Limited
S S Motors (Fuels) Limited was formed in November 1966 by Arthur Munns and his brother Leonard Munns and we had our original depot at Blackhorse Lane in Chatteris.
From day one S S Motors were distributors for Gulf Oil, and our lorries carried the famous Gulf blue and orange livery.
In March 1970, having outgrown the original Blackhorse Road yard, Gulf Oil built a brand new, purpose built depot, for S S Motors to lease, at Honeysome Road in Chatteris and this has remained our home to this day. The move to the larger premises at Honeysome Road being overseen by Arthur's eldest son, Michael Munns.
In December 1997 Gulf Oil was sold to Shell UK, which ended our 30 year relationship with Gulf. After a period of restructuring, Shell decided that they did not want to retain ownership of the depot, so in July 2005 we aquired the depot, and entered into an agreement to purchase our fuel from Shell. At this time we also made the decison not to carry the Shell pecton, choosing instead to create our own livery and logo, which retains the blue and orange from our early days.
However, this all changed on the 11th of December 2005, when the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal, also know as Buncefield, caught fire, and was destroyed. This was where we had been collecting our Shell fuel from, and due to the fire, Shell had to declare 'Force Majeure', leaving us to source our fuel from alternative suppliers without penalty.
S S Motors was now, and still remains, truly independant.
We buy our fuel on the open market, and are not tied to any oil company or supllier.
The company is still wholly owned and run by the Munns family, and in 2012 is celebrating it's 45th year.
