Working Mens College Students

Working Mens College Students

44 Crowndale Rd., Camden Town ,
Working Men's College (WMC), the oldest surviving adult education institute in Europe, was founded in 1854 and was associated with the Cooperative Movement and the Christian Socialists, stemming, from the same tradition that led later to the Worker's Educational Association. The Working Women's College, founded 10 years later in 1864, finally merged with WMC in 1967. Early supporters of both have included F D Maurice, John Stuart Mill, Tom Hughes, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, Ford Maddox Brown, Walter de la Mare and Octavia Hill. Originally based in Red Lion Street, we have been in this listed building in Camden Town since 1905. We have continued to develop the tradition of liberal education and today the College serves the whole community, with women, unemployed and refugee students forming the majority of the student body. We have grown rapidly in recent years but are still small enough to know all our students and to respond to their individual needs. WMC was designated as a Specialist Designated Institution (SDI) under the 1992 Further Education Act.

London Irish Centre

London Irish Centre

50-52 Camden Square, Camden Town ,
We are the oldest and largest Irish organisation outside of Ireland and have been the home of all things Irish in London for almost sixty years. Our welfare work involves looking after the needs and interests of the Irish community in London, of which a large number are elderly, and in many cases isolated. Our drop in advice service, outreach workers, and friendly Day Centre Lunch Club provide support, social opportunities, and a friendly face to our elderly clients. Our doors are also open to recent arrivals from Ireland. We can offer help and support in getting started in the big city. Let’s not forget our large troop of volunteers that provide invaluable support to our work across the board. The second aspect of our work involves the promotion of contemporary and traditional Irish culture. We deliver a diverse programme of music, dance, film, comedy and more, showcasing the very best of Irish creativity and tradition. This programme includes the Return to Camden Town Festival, the UK’s largest Irish music festival. Alongside these events we run a strong education programme, which offers the opportunity to learn to play Irish music, learn a jig or reel, or even study the Irish Language. Finally, our great facilities are available for hire. We have spaces that can facilitate everything from small meetings up to 300-capacity concerts or conferences, all at reasonable rates, with the assurance of a top quality experience. www.londonirishcentre.org
