The Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland cares for members of our local community: their families, friends and neighbours, who benefit from the wide range of professional and holistic services which the Charity freely provides. The number of patients cared for at Bishop Auckland has increased significantly. Our Out-Reach Day Hospices at Sedgefield, Barnard Castle and Weardale continue to go from strength to strength and we have also expanded our Palliative Home Care Team working in the same area. Although we do receive some funding from the NHS, the vast majority of our costs are financed by the generous support of many people, companies and organisations in the Bishop Auckland area who see the Butterwick as their charity. Your help plays an important part in ensuring the continuation of our work and you can be assured that you are making a real and lasting difference to their lives and those of their families.

Bishop Auckland Hospital is a small NHS district general hospital serving the western part of County Durham, with a primarily rural catchment area centred on the Wear Valley. It was opened in 2002 and then had around 286 beds, but this number has since been cut substantially. There has been much controversy over the recent 'decline of services' in this hospital. The hospital is part of the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust.
