Atherstone's Heritage
Since 1995 the Friends of Atherstone Heritage have been collecting photographs, artefacts, documents and information about Atherstone and the surrounding villages. The aim has always been to make this information available to local people and anyone with a connection to the town by way of an exhibition centre or on the internet, or both. This site aims to make the rich heritage of Atherstone available to all on line.
Preparatory work for this website has been made possible by 2 grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded to a partnership between the Friends and Volunteer Centre North Warwickshire. The first project started in 2009 and enabled the group to catalogue existing material whilst researching 100 years of Atherstone. One of the significant results was the recruiting of a number of excellent, new volunteers.
In 2010 a second grant was awarded to study the ‘yards’ of Atherstone and the associated cottage industries which grew up in the town as a response to the Industrial Revolution. This work is ongoing and the group would welcome any contributions to their knowledge of these unique areas of public housing.
The Friends have recently acquired a storage facility where the public will be able to come, by appointment, to study the history, geology and art of Atherstone and North Warwickshire.
