Dukes at Komedia

Dukes at Komedia

44-47 Gardner St, Brighton ,
Two legendary Brighton venues announce they are working together to provide the very best of screen and live entertainment under one roof: Dukes at Komedia The Duke of York’s Picturehouse will open a brand new two screen cinema within the Komedia building on Gardner Street in Brighton. The new development is the result of an innovative collaboration between Komedia and Picturehouse Cinemas. The newly remodeled building will combine Komedia’s award-winning programme of comedy, cabaret, live music and children’s theatre in the refurbished and technically enhanced downstairs cabaret and studio theatre, with the Duke of York’s cinematic experience, which Brighton knows and loves, taking place in a newly created cinema upstairs. Work on the site will commence in the summer with a view to opening its doors in December 2012. This latest announcement follows the recent successful launch of the new Hackney Picturehouse in East London. The two screens will have 150 and 100 seats each. At the entrance there will be a café/bar and there will be a mezzanine bar at the entrance to the screens. The new screens will have state of the art digital projection and be furnished with the most comfortable reclining seats. These extra screens will allow The Duke of York’s to expand its already eclectic and very popular programme of cinema, alternative content, music, special events, cult and classic repertory and unique nights. Local artist Jamie McCartney will be sculpting a new pair of legs for the new venue, modeled on the famous pair that sits atop the Duke of York’s on Preston Circus. The new cinema will be one of the key host venues for Brighton’s Film Festival CINECITY, held each year in November/December. CINECITY is a co-production of The Duke of York’s Picturehouse and the University of Brighton.
